From Spello to Assisi – Cycling through churches
This tour develops in one of the most fascinating and evocative areas of Umbria, where we will admire the artistic beauties of Assisi and Spello through the most significant places of worship.
After visiting, starting from Spello, the famous Baglioni chapel with frescoes by Pinturicchio, we will visit the Church of San Claudio, oneof the most beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture in the city of Spello and the Roman amphitheater.
Not far away we will find Villa Fidelia or Costanzi, a seventeenth-century walled building with a large park and Italian garden, built on the site of a Roman sanctuary of the fourth century.
Continuing after about 15 minutes we will reach the sanctuary of Rivotorto which is called the Hovel, the place where Francis of Assisi and his first companions settled to pray, meditate, work at the dawn of the Franciscan Fraternity.
A few hundred meters away is the English War Cemetery where the bodies of 949 fallen of the Commonwealth rest.
We will then visit the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in which there is the church of the Porziuncola and the places of prayer of St. Francis.
Through the “Mattonata di Assisi” we will arrive at the Basilica of San Francesco, a place of Christian worship famous all over the world.
